VOLTA began life in Basel in 2005 as a collaboration between friends and dealers to support ambitious international galleries to participate in the art markets’ major cities. Every year, renowned galleries bring their artists and their art to the Swiss metropolis and show the most innovative positions that the art market has to offer.
At VOLTA Basel MeetFrida now presents itself for the second time with art. We show two up-and-coming artists who both deal with the relationship between the human body and its social perception in very different ways.
Characterized by their opaque, evocative colors and sweeping floral forms, Philippa Brück's current work embodies a new view on physicality and the close connection between life and decay. Her usually large-scale oil paintings seem to move on the threshold to traditional still-life painting, although they include figurative subjects and embrace a contemporary interest in the work of collage. They are connecting fragments of flowers, plants, landscapes, insects or human limbs to create new bodies, new figures.
Philippa Brück was born in Germany in 1993. She studied Scenic Painting at the University of Fine Arts Dresden and Illustration at the University of Applied Science Hamburg.
Brey studied fine arts in Würzburg and Hamburg and presented her drawings in Colombia, Italy, Austria, Morocco and Germany. Since 2017 she has been working as a freelance visual artist. Solo exhibitions in Würzburg at Posthalle (2016) and Museumsquartier Vienna (2015), group exhibitions including "International Congress of Illustration" Bogota, Colombia (2018), "Kunst in der Börse" at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce (2018), "Offspace" at Deichtorhallen Hamburg/Halle für zeitgenössische Kunst (2019).
During her artist-in-residence program in Morocco in 2019 as part of her master's thesis, she exhibited in Erfourd (Morocco) and conducted art projects with children of the desert. Christine Brey was awarded the "Bergkristall Award" (prize for the best bachelor thesis at FHWS Würzburg), the "Jung und Gegenständlich Award" Bodenseekreis and received project funding from Hamburg Mitte. Brey is the founder of the artist collective and exhibition series "Inside Draftswomen".
