Acrylic on canvas. "'To the Beauty' and 'Olympia's New Friend' are also based on a computer-assisted collage, which is the first stage of my artistic process. I incorporate so many sources of inspiration that a new image emerges that stands on its own as its own source. This process helps me to focus on certain concepts while considering cultural phenomena that relate to that concept. In these images, I focus on beauty in its historical perspective."
Gidi Gilam mixes images from art history and images collected online to create paintings that can serve as narratives for phenomena that he believes are happening in culture. These narrative situations are starting points for questions related to the concept of "identity" and the longing for the unattainable. Gilam gathers information from things he sees online, a phrase, an image, or how the two relate to each other. He constructs the compositions of his paintings beforehand in a sketchbook and on the computer. Gilam's paintings are figurative, favoring a carefully selected pop color palette, and in contrast are skeptical and at times ill-tempered. This form of visual tension invites the viewer to discover their subjective narratives within the paintings, offering another level of interpretation. Gidi Gilam lives and works in Berlin. He holds a B.A. in History and Philosophy from Tel Aviv University and a B.A. from the Faculty of Visual Communication at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. He has been awarded a D.A.A.D. scholarship, a Rabinovitch scholarship and the Mifaal HaPais. His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and are in several private collections in France and the United States.
